Georgian Celebrations and Heritage Breaks

A Georgian Celebration
2014 heralds the 300th anniversary of the beginning of the most celebrated period in architecture following the accession to the throne of George I. The Georgian era spanned over 100 years to 1830 and influenced the design and building of many grand country houses.

This golden age was captured across the arts and culture. Its legacy lives on through glorious architecture, art and literature.

The appeal of Georgian houses lies in a pleasing symmetry and proportion to the façade – as well as an adherence to the classical rules of architecture. The interiors have generous rooms, large sash windows, high ceilings, simple panelling and decorative architectural detail.

The Georgian house became an expression of status and of its occupants’ standing in society. It was a rich period of house building and mirrored the country’s prominence on the international stage.

Many of the great country house owners of the 18th century were captivated and influenced by their experiences on the Grand Tour of Europe. As a result, a number of ancestral houses were “refronted”. Some properties simply had a new façade added to the front elevation to give the older building a Georgian appearance. Other buildings were turned round, with the original rear or side elevation being remodelled, together with the garden and grounds, to complete the Georgian appearance.

Our award-winning collection of 20 country house hotels across the UK and Channel Islands features a number of Georgian properties, all architecturally splendid former private country houses with fascinating histories. Georgian hotels include Buxted Park Hotel in Ashdown Forest, Sussex, Bailbrook House Hotel in Bath and Hendon Hall Hotel in North London. For those looking for a relaxing spa break whilst enjoying the period architecture of the Georgian era, Brandshatch Place Hotel & Spa in Fawkham, Kent, Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa in Nantwich, Cheshire and Wood Hall Hotel & Spa in Wetherby, Yorkshire provide the perfect respite.

My husband and I have just had a wonderful Weekend stay at Bailbrook House Hotel. The hotel is very elegant and the staff most welcoming and friendly. The feature rooms are very luxurious & indulgent and a highlight was dining in the lovely Cloisters restaurant. We can certainly recommend this hotel for a wonderful stay and will certainly be back!
