Now, more than ever, companies feel that they need to get the best performance from their employees. Someone once said that it’s not the hours you put in your work that count, it’s the work you put in the hours. It is widely accepted that focus from leadership and business teams improves greatly when they are taken out of their own office environment. All businesses want to ensure that they get the maximum return on any investment and gaining tangible results from a meeting or conference for employees has never been more important.

One of my favourite places to have lunch is on the terrace at L’Horizon. You are right on the beach on the wide sweep of St Brelade’s Bay. With glorious fresh air and the tide lapping gently on the sand, this is the perfect setting to enjoy some locally caught seafood. The food writer Elizabeth David extolled the simple delights of an omelette and a glass of wine. 

Napoleon, Florence Nightingale and Margaret Thatcher got by on four hours a night but most people do need more to avoid that alarm clock grogginess after a late night. No one is really sure why we need sleep. Some believe that sleep gives the body a chance to recuperate from the day's activities but in reality, the amount of energy saved by sleeping for even eight hours is tiny.

The renaissance of afternoon tea has demonstrated how we love an excuse to meet friends. We have now reinvented another great British tradition – elevenses.

Many people may have resolved to place a bigger emphasis on relaxation and this can be achieved without the need for unrealistic levels of self-denial.
